Women from ethnic minorities are particularly sidelined. The small amount of women’s history that is accessible is focused on a tiny number of white, middle-class women. As a result, minority communities can feel like the heritage isn’t relevant to them.
The Women activists of East London project is developing a walking tour app. It explores the history of women-led activism in the East London boroughs of Hackney, Tower Hamlets and Waltham Forest. It focuses on the themes of:
- gender violence
- the labour movement, and
- social unrest/civil disobedience
across two recent historical periods: the early 1900s and the 1960s-80s.
